POPPY POST RACE DAY>>

Poppy Half Marathon once again defied the elements in Bexhill on Saturday.
Runners, organisers, spectators, marshals and helpers alike braved strong winds and near constant rain in the 9th running of the event which the weather gods invariably seem to frown on.
Race director Lee Holdaway said: "Thanks to all who made it to Bexhill and ran in what can only be described as testing conditions.
"Not as bad as last year" was the quote most used , but still pretty tough out there and just as last year, the wind also blew very hard, Some great times achieved and a lot of personal goals realised. All in all a wonderful atmosphere amongst you all and for a great cause"
The popular annual seafront event featured races over three different distances one after the other. A 5k race kicked things off at 10am, followed by the 10k at 11am and the half marathon at 12.30pm. All started and finished on the lawns outside the De La Warr Pavilion.
The southerly wind seemed very strong for the start of the half marathon so the finishers certainly earned their specially-designed commemorative medal.
Alan Silvester (Arena 80 AC) was the winner in 1:17.27, with Jim Ashworth-Beaumont (Serpentine) second in 1:18.04. Matthew Dowle (Bodyworks XTC) was a close third in 1:20.15, while Sue Fry (Hailsham Harriers) was the leading lady in 1:27.22.
The 10k produced 247 finishers, the first of whom was Gary Elliott in 35:50. Danny White (Lordshill Road Runners) was second in 36:01 and Ricky Coleman (Arena 80) third in 40:05. Liz Lumber (Hailsham Harriers) was the first woman in 42:44.
Josh Varney (Eastbourne Rovers AC) won the 5K in 17:26 - just eight seconds clear of runner-up Joshua Wallace (Neath Harriers). Bexhill Runners & Triathletes came third and fourth via Dan Marshman and Martyn Reynolds.
Leading finishers - Poppy Half Marathon: 1st Alan Silvester (Arena 80 AC) 1:17.27, 2nd Jim Ashworth-Beaumont (Serpentine) 1:18.04, 3rd Matthew Dowle (Bodyworks XTC) 1:20.15, 4th Daniel Quinn (Lingfield RC) 1:20.39, 5th Dan Vaughan (Arena 80 AC) 1:21.32, 6th Ben Adams (Haywards Heath Harriers) 1:21.54, 7th Paul Hunt (Clapham Chasers) 1:21.56, 8th Joshua Rudd (Seaford Striders) 1:22.01, 9th Ben Duncan (Haywards Heath Harriers) 1:22.43, 10th Lee Cooper (Larkfield AC) 1:22.45, 11th James Wright 1:23.17, 12th Michael Hobbs (Crawley AC) 1:24.51, 13th Philip Handrihan (Hastings AC) 1:25.32, 14th Ryan Stokes (Horsham Joggers) 1:26.22, 15th Simon Coppard (Portslade Hedgehoppers) 1:26.47, 16th David Kofoed 1:26.48, 17th Sue Fry (Hailsham Harriers) 1:27.22, 18th Marcus Holloway 1:27.27, 19th Kelvin Desmoyers-Davis (Tunbridge Wells Harriers) 1:27.28, 20th Tim Archer 1:29.53.
10K: 1st Gary Elliott 35:50, 2nd Danny White (Lordshill Road Runners) 36:01, 3rd Ricky Coleman (Arena 80) 40:05, 4th Richard Davis (Eastbourne Rovers AC) 40:43, 5th Alec Burks 40:46, 6th Matthew Quinton (Haywards Heath Harriers) 40:51, 7th Ian Burks (Reigate Priory) 41:18, 8th Shaun Eves 41:26, 9th Lee Kemp 41:56, 10th Kieran Price 42:02, 11th George Strong (7Oaks Athletics Club) 42:11, 12th Neil Davidson 42:19, 13th Erik Chapman (PH Fitness) 42:27, 14th Bruce Salter (Pieathletes) 42:33, 15th Liz Lumber (Hailsham Harriers) 42:44, 16th Bryan Tiller (Haywards Heath Harriers) 43:17, 17th Ian Weston (Polegate Plodders) 43:24, 18th Andrew Isaac (Westbourne RC) 44:02, 19th Benjamin Lucas 44:03, 20th David Head 44:13.

The event was organised by the charity Raising Money for Good Causes and they are pleased to have supported several organisations this year, including the Sidley Beavers, SERV Blood, The Royal British Legion, St Michael's Hospice, Sussex Search & Rescue and Kids for Action.
The Charity event organisers wish to thank the marshals from Sidley Beavers, Sussex Search & Rescue and many others who gave up their free time to stand in the rain throughout the day.. Sponsors Yazoo who supplied free chocolate and strawberry milk drinks to the finishes and the crowd throughout the day, GMP Charted Accountants whose staff maned the aid stations and made a considerable donation to our charity, James Shepard who looked after the music , Hannah Bradbeer for her lovely signing of the National Anthem , team from the Star Fish Races for giving out the medals , DWLP for allowing us to utilise the whole building and of course our staff and family...
2017 is our 10th year and is going to be a huge event.. Its also a very special day being on Armistice Day the 11th of the 11 month... We will also be inviting back the winners of the Poppy who have raced over the last 10 years..
Thank you for all the support.. Lee Holdaway .. Race Director.

RACE INFO

Dear Runners!

A big thank you for entering the 5k, 10k or 1⁄2 marathon on Nov 12th 2016 and supporting our Charity.  Also a big thank you for helping us build the biggest sporting event in Bexhill.

Thanks to the De La Warr for allowing our race to be based from this iconic listed building. The restaurant is open from around 8:30am throughout the day for coffee, tea, cakes etc.  Please be respectful inside and out of the area.

You can learn more about the DLWP here www.dlwp.co.uk

Format of the Day – Based from De La Warr Pavilion TN40 1DP

Each race will aim to start prompt so please ensure you are registered and near the start line! Please note races are for runners only, all courses are laps on the promenade.  Unfortunately due to the numbers of runners and course format it is not suitable for wheelchairs, buggies or runners with dogs.

8:45am Registration opens in the De La Warr – For all runners, collect race numbers, timing chips and any ordered T-Shirts or bobble hats.

10am - 5km Race Start (60 mins Cut off) Min age 14 yrs.

11am - 10km Race Start (Cut off 12:30pm, 90 mins)

12-12:15pm – Kids 1 mile Youth Run & 500m fun run. No registration needed for 500m just turn up. All Kids will receive a finisher’s medal in both the 500m Fun and competitive 1 mile.

12:20pm - Memorial Service, National Anthem (sung by Hannah Bradbeer), Last Post, 2 minutes silence.

12:30pm (ASAP after the Memorial Service)  - Poppy Half Marathon

Cut off is 3hrs 30 mins and the Half Marathon course is cleared at 4pm.

Registration 8:45am – 12:15pm
Registration is in the main hall of De La Warr Pavilion.

You are not required to bring anything to registration, just know your surname! Bags etc can be left in the lower Hall.

Car Parking

There is plenty of parking around Bexhill town and the seafront, and it is free. There is a limited amount of parking in the De La Warr car park which is fee paying. We would advise parking around the town and seafront and walking the short distance to the De La Warr Pavilion.

Official Photography

http://www.sportsactionphoto.co.uk/v/photos/poppyhalf

Toilets

There are toilets inside De La Warr Pavilion and also a bank of porta-loo toilets outside around race start. Public Toilets on the prom to the East (500 mtrs) and the West (500 mtrs) of the start line.

Race courses. A map below shows the start/finish, Aid station. Full interactive maps of the 3 races can be found at http://www.poppyhalf.co.uk/training.php

In summary:

5km – 1 x out & back route.
10km – 2 x 5k laps.
Half Marathon – 2 x 8km laps followed by a final lap of the 5km course.

Races are held on the promenade, with a small section on South Cliff Road. Some sections will have runners heading in both directions so do make sure you keep to the LEFT throughout the run. The half marathon is 3 laps so lead runners will catch the slower runners, again please keep to the left and be aware. We would request you don’t use MP3 players during the run, as it stops you hearing marshals and instructions on the course. The courses are laps based on the promenade and not suitable for wheelchairs, buggies or dogs etc.

Don't forget the Promenade is open to the Public.

Aid station – Sponsored by GMP Accountants

There will be a Water/Feed station on the promenade by De La Warr. (see map)

5k – runners, no water station – please carry water if you feel you will require it.
10km – Water/Feed station at 5km (halfway)
Half Marathon – pass the Water Station at 5km/8km/13km/ 16km. Please carry any additional water/fuel if you need a different race nutrition strategy.

Post race snacks and drink will be available after your race in the Marquee outside DLWP.  Plus the DLWP café will be open all day for athletes and spectators.

Chip Timing

Timing chip and strap can be collected at registration, please fit around your ANKLE or onto your shoe. Please make sure it is secure. Chips will not read on the mats if they are in your hand, wrist etc. Chips are handed back in after you cross the finish line. Your official race finish time ticket will be available from the timing desk in the Marquee with the post race snacks.

Massage

Massage therapy will be offered by Ashley Marsh and Becky Breen.

Medical

Wealden Medical will be providing medical cover for race day, if you have any issues requiring medical assistance notify the nearest race marshal.

Please ensure you are fit and healthy before starting your race, and you are fully aware of the physical exertion you are about to attempt!

The layout of the race area at DLWP is below. The interactive course maps can be viewed from http://www.poppyhalf.co.uk/training.php

We look forward to see you on Saturday 12th November.

Race Report 2012

The 5th Poppy Half Marathon – 2 Course records broken

Glorious sunshine bathed the 560 runners as they started the 5th Poppy half Marathon at 12:30pm on Sunday Nov 10th.  Athletes and race team marked remembrance Sunday with a 2 mins silence at the race HQ by Sovereign café.

The perfect weather conditions and the flat 4 loop course provided the runners with a great opportunity to run fast times, and they didn’t dissapoint with both the Male and Female Course records being broken.

James Baker (Chichester AC ) and Daniel Anderson ( Hastings Ac) who are both former winners of this event, returned to battle it out in the mens race. While, Emily Proto (Bexhill 5k series winner) and some new names on the start sheet promised a quick women’s race.

James Baker went off at a blistering pace to open up a large lead early on, James held this great effort throughout the half marathon and crossed the finish line in a new record time of 1 hr 9 mins  55 secs, with Daniel Anderson securing 2nd place in 1hr 14mins 23secs. Glenn Driver completed the top 3 males with 1hr 16 mins 6 secs.

Rebecca Moore led the female race from start to finish and was also 4th overall athlete home in a new and outstanding course record of 1hr 18mins 31 secs.

Emily Proto was 2nd and 13th athlete home overall in 1hr 26mins 23 secs, with Claire Gaskill in 3rd in 1hr 28mins 33secs.

Overall winners collected trophies, vouchers for The Tri Store.com in Eastbourne, and TL Sports race vouchers. Each group winner also collected a trophy and TL events voucher.

The bright sunshine also brought many kids out for the 500m and 1km kids fun runs with over 60 youngsters ranging from 3yrs of age to 15yrs taking part. Greg Bennett and Georgia Landy were first boy and girl home in the 1km race.

People of all ages and abilities completed the Poppy Half, many first timers, some charity runners dressed at Gladiators entertained the supporters around the course. Eddie Dolan local BRT runner completed his 5th Poppy half in 3hrs 16 mins 36 secs at the fighting fit age of 80 yrs!  First local BRT athlete home was Becci Holdaway in 1hr 32 mins 59 secs to take 5th Female.

Profits from the race t-shirt sales and donations on race day came to over £500 and will be added to a total of over £5000 raised from the Poppy Half over the 5 years towards the RBL.

Thanks to supporting club BRT (Bexhill Runners & Triathletes) to all marshals on race day, and sponsors the tri store.com, Gibbons Mannington & Phipps accountants.

Poppy Half will return on Nov 10th 2013.  TL Sports Events have races from 5k runs to triathlons, marathons.  These can all be seen at www.tlsportsevents.co.uk

Course remains - News 2012

As you know we had been working towards bringing a new course for 2012, as it is Olympic year and the Poppy race is growing into a large half marathon event.  By changing the course it would allow the race to increase in participants and take in more areas of the town.

We had meetings with several local council representatives who had promised full support pushing through road closure applications and everything else that is needed to bring a large event to a town.

Unfortunately due to some internal changes in local council and for reasons we are unsure about the situation has changed. The support is not there and we have to start from scratch.  Now going through same processes as though we are a new event, not an established race which has brought thousands of people to the town, promoted and raised thousands for Royal British Legion.

This means for this year we will keep the same format as the previous years and keep the entry limit capped at 750. This is a positive, as the race has been successful and the format works for runners and spectator atmosphere.

See you all in November!

11 Apr 12

Entries coming in / New course

Entries are now starting to flood in for the 2012 Poppy Half Marathon.  The new course is with the local authorities and we hope to release it soon.

The revised course will stay fast and flat, but allow for more athletes with a better flow.  A reduced number of loops but keeping great atmosphere as runners return to the town centre during the race to get a big cheer on from your loved ones.

A donation presentation from the 2011 event proceeds will be made to the Royal British Legion in the build up to this years event.

This will be great for first timers to celebrate Remembrance Sunday in your sporting way or for the competitive runner looking for a last chance personal best time over 13.1 miles!

2011 ENTRY LIST

26 Oct 11

Over 600 entries so far...

With just under three weeks to go until this year's race we've already had more than 600 entries which makes this the biggest Poppy Half Marathon to date! If you are still thinking about entering (or know someone who is), please do so as soon as possible to secure your space in what we're sure will be a really special event...

We'll be emailing out more information to all runners over the next couple of weeks but just to confirm that the race will start at 12:30pm. Children's Races (500M/1K/2K) will start from 12 noon (sign up on the day).  Race Registration will be open from 10:30am for collection of race numbers, timing chips and pre-ordered t-shirts.  We will of course be observing the two minutes silence at 11:00am.

In addition to trophies and prize money for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Male & Female athletes, the 1st Male and Female in each age group will also receive a trophy. There will also be a trophy for the 1st Male Club Team and 1st Female Club Team (cumulative times of first three runners to count).

The 4 lap course is perfect for spectators - so please encourage your friends and family to come along to cheer you on!

Please don't hesitate to call or email us if you have any queries: 01424 810096 / info@poppyhalf.co.uk

Race Update

With less than 8 weeks to go until this year's Poppy Half Marathon, entries are coming in fast and we expect to sell out all 750 places well in advance of race day. If you haven't already entered or have friends or family that are interested, we recommend that you get your entries in as soon as possible to secure your spot! The event's success allows us to make continued donations to the invaluable work of the Royal British Legion.

The fast, flat course with a four lap format has great PB potential and allows spectators to cheer on the athletes throughout the race. As usual, we'll be having Children's Races prior the main event (entry on the day), so why not bring the whole family along for an afternoon of racing?

We've got an exciting new t-shirt design and bespoke medal for this year's race (see right). The race t-shirt is now in a technical material which is perfect for racing and training and can be purchased for £6.00 at the time of entry. You can also email info@poppyhalf.co.uk to reserve one at this special offer price (please state size required) and bring cash payment on the day. A limited amount of t-shirts will be available to purchase on the day for £10.00.

Although we're still a few weeks away from this year's race, we've already got exciting plans in place for the 2012 Poppy Half Marathon. There will be a new course, increased field size and lots more! Keep checking the website for more updates or follow us on twitter (@tlsportsevents or @paulholdaway1) or Facebook (TL Sports Events) to be among the first to find out.

If you have any queries about the Poppy Half Marathon please call us on 01424 810096 or email info@poppyhalf.co.uk.

We look forward to seeing many of you on November 13th!

We hope to start the training plan advice and some dates for some practical training mornings with around 12 weeks until race day which will really help you prepare for the Half Marathon.

We will keep you posted.

Race Report.

The 3rd Poppy Half Marathon took place in Bexhill on Remembrance Sunday 14th Nov. Hosted by Bexhill Runners this years event for the first time sold out reaching the limit of 600 entries.

In the last two years over £5000 has been raised in support of the Royal British Legion and the race organisers expect a considerable sum from this years event. Ernie Eldridge, president of the local Royal British Legion came along to present the winners cash prizes.

Once again weather was unkind with torrential rain, but despite this the runners still turned up for the start on West Parade at 12:30pm

The lapped Poppy course passed along West Parade, lower promenade, Richmond Road, Polegrove and Brockley Road. It all created for a great atmosphere with  spectators, family and friends able to encourage the runners throughout the race.

There was a huge range of age and abilities from total beginners, through to experienced runners. Many Runners achieved great personal goals including one lady runner who raised over £15,000 for a Childrens Charity.

Nick Sasha of Torq Fitness led from start to finish setting a new course record in 1 hr 13 mins 37 secs, local Hastings AC athlete Joshua Varney 2nd and Robert Jeffery making the top 3. In the ladies race local Bexhill Runner Susie Casebourne completed her fantastic season with another win, completing the distance in 1:29:00 and finishing 20th overall. Sophie Grant and Ali Farrall made up the top 3 females.

The children’s races preceded the main event with the kids fortunately escaping the rain.  Over 50 competed in either a 500m, 1km or 2km race.  With the adult runners and  spectators it created a great atmosphere for the kids, Winners were: 500m – Alexander Field 1 min 55 / 1km Greg Bennett  3 mins 55 / 2km – Oliver Platts 7 mins 56. What a future for running in Bexhill!

To list and thank everybody we would need a whole page, but a big thank you has to go to Stella from the Sovereign Café on West Parade for offering the surrounding area as race registration and keeping everyone well fed from dawn until dusk.,   www.tlsportsevents.co.uk for the chip timing and race equipment services, Active Rother and Rother Council for their continued support of the race, marshals and many many others. A huge thank to all the local residents for accommodating the race, especially from the flats on west parade who handed out hot drinks to the runners.

Full results can be viewed at www.poppyhalf.co.uk including links to race photos.  http://gallery.sussexsportphotography.com/a.tlx?k=45fzga7

Entries for the 2011 Poppy Half Marathon will be live on January 1st.

I just wanted to drop a note to say thanks for today (and for getting me a place!)

I really enjoyed the race and I have to say am very grateful to all the volunteers for staying out and staying cheery after the heavens opened!!!

Please pass on my thanks to them all.

Also good to be part of an event for such a good cause and I hope the fundraising has gone well.

Thanks again (BR)

I just wanted to thank you and the team for a brilliant event yesterday i really enjoyed it. Hopefully see you next year.

All the best

(JH)

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone involved in organising the Poppy Half. I

t was only my 3rd half marathon but by far the best.

In fact, best race I've ever competed in.

Brilliantly organised, friendly marshals, fab atmosphere, despite the weather. And of  course the cakes at the end were to die for...!

I love my medal too, a really lovely memento, much better than a lot of the cheap
nasty ones  I've seen dished out!

So nice not to be bombarded with corporate sponsor tat at the finish, just a medal, water, a piece of fruit and cake - what's not to like!

Well done to everyone involved.

Thanks again for putting on such a fab event and I'll hopefully see you next year!
